Any source of wood is susceptible to termite infestation and damage. The subterranean termite is most likely to infest if the wood is in contact with soil. Termites will infest wood that is located inside or outside of a structure in Manhattan, Kansas City Metro and surrounding areas and cause most damage to the following items:
- Flooring
- Wall studs
- Insulation
- Support beams
- Posts
- Lumber
- Sheds
- Outdoor furniture
- Wooden decks
Why Do Termites Infest Wood?
Wood contains a substance called cellulose, which is uniquely what termites require to survive. When wood is in contact with the soil, wood items or structures are more vulnerable. Since most homes are built with a substantial amount of wood, termites are often attracted to buildings. The inside of a building can have wood in the walls, drywood, ceilings, floorboards, support beams, baseboards, windows, and insulation. Outside, termites will infest roof tiles, decaying logs, firewood piles, patio furniture, and more.

Termite-Resistant Materials
Termites do have materials that they are not interested in. Some of these materials even include types of wood:
- Redwood/cedar: Commonly considered as naturally resistant to termites, however, decay will attract termites to both types of wood.
- Cement/concrete: These materials are too solid and lack the cellulose they desire. They can bypass these materials to access other areas that have cellulose if there are small cracks in the concrete.
- Treated lumber: The lumber can become undesirable to pests and prevent rot from taking place. Treated lumber is commonly used in newer builds for this reason.
- Metal: Metal does not contain cellulose and is not attractive to termites.
