Thanks to their similar size and appearance, termites are often mistaken for ants and other insects. That said, there are still a few ways you can tell them apart. A few unique characteristics of termites include:
- Straight, cylindrical body without a pinched waist.
- Bead-like antennae that do not bend.
- Color ranging from pale or creamy white to black.
- Reproductives have two sets of equal-sized wings.
What Do Different Species Look Like?
Termites come in several species, each with distinct physical characteristics. The three most common types are subterranean, drywood, and dampwood termites.
Subterranean termites, the most widespread and destructive species here in Manhattan, Kansas City Metro and surrounding areas, are usually small with workers measuring about 1/8 of an inch in length. They have creamy white to dark brown bodies. The reproductive alates are dark brown or black with translucent wings of equal size. Soldiers have larger, elongated heads with powerful mandibles to defend the colony.
Drywood termites are slightly larger, with workers and soldiers reaching up to 3/8 inch. Their bodies are a light brown color, and the alates have dark brown wings with a distinctive vein pattern. Drywood termite soldiers have robust, rectangular heads and large mandibles, while the workers have softer, pale bodies.
Dampwood termites are the largest among the three, with some species growing over 1/2 inch. They prefer moist wood and have a darker, reddish-brown body. The alates of dampwood termites have long wings that are typically pale brown. The soldiers have large, powerful jaws and a more cylindrical head shape compared to the other species.

Characteristics of Termite Castes
Termite colonies are divided into several castes, or roles. At different stages in the life cycle and in different castes, a termite will take on a unique appearance. While each species is a bit different, here’s an overview of how the different castes look:
- Workers: These are the most common caste and are easily spotted by their creamy-white coloration.
- Soldiers: These are most frequently confused for ants due to their size and dark coloration, but they have visibly powerful mandibles.
- Alates: Also called swarmers or reproductives, these have wings and are the most likely of the three to be seen outside of the colony.
How to Tell If You Have Termites
Since termites rarely leave their nest, it’s very hard to tell when they’re nearby. For that reason, the best way to spot an infestation is to enlist the help of a licensed pest control professional.
